ROB DRAPER'S TACTICAL BREAKDOWN: Nailing set-piece routines in 6-2 win

‘s reign as manager was under scrutiny with the national team’s record coming into the World Cup – but he silenced the doubters with a near-perfect tactical performance as they won their opening game.

England won 6-2 against Iran at the Khalifa International Stadium, with a brace for and goals for Jude Bellingham, Raheem Sterling, Marcus Rashford and .

While two goals for Iran courtesy of Porto striker Mehdi Taremi took some off the gloss from England’s comprehensive victory, it was still largely a tactical success for Southgate as they opened their World Cup campaign.

Southgate you’re the one….
again

Southgate joked that he knew social media would be saying ‘we’ve got all these talented players and they’ve put this numpty in charge.’

He was booed off at Molineux and the San Siro this year, but the old Atomic Kitten song was out again last night.

From ‘getting sacked in the morning,’ it’s now ‘Southgate you’re the one/you still turn me on.’

Raheem Sterling, lacking Chelsea form, looked vulnerable, but for England, he’s Southgate’s go-to man. He didn’t disappoint, with the little feints and turns he’s been missing at Chelsea coming in abundance here.
As well as a sharp finish for the third goal.

Raheem Sterling continued his strong England form with a goal in the 6-2 hammering of Iran

There was more momentum behind picking Bukayo Saka and two goals on his World Cup debut make in a shoo-in for the next game.

Reverting to a back four for group stages against less threatening opposition makes sense.

It doesn’t always work though. Iran were resolutely back five – and that really isn’t easy to break down. There was an early worry that they weren’t moving the ball quick enough and Iran were getting back into defensive position easily.

But, a combination of Iran not being able to find their out men – Mehdi Taremi and Ali Jahahbakhsh – meant the pressure was relentless and when England started to move the ball quickly, they couldn’t cope.

From Russia with Love

In the Euros, England set pieces were desperately disappointing.

This was more like Russia 2018, where they led the way. Despite having little preparation time, they seemed on top of their routines from the third minute, when Harry Maguire was seemingly wrestled to the ground by Rouzbeh Chesmi from a Kieran Trippier corner.

His departure disappointed the England fans as they felt he had been performing well

Harry Maguire impressed for England from early on, as set-pieces proved key to their success

It wasn’t just corners though.

Twice, Trippier almost found Harry Kane from a free kick routine with clever runs peeling away down a blind channel – though that move will now be noted by all opposition coaches.

The seventh minute clash of heads which saw Ali Beianvand depart came after Tripper found Kane in that way and crossed, with the goalkeeper’s touch denying Sterling, who would have scored.

There was the 32nd-minute corner which Maguire headed on to the bar from Trippier and then the second goal, where Luke Shaw’s corner found Maguire (again), the United defender then setting up Bukayo Saka for his lovely volley on the bounce.

Set pieces are a key factor, not least in tight games.

To see England on top of their set piece routines was hugely encouraging.

The shirt pull by Stones to concede the penalty at the end was a warning though – VAR will seek out all your sneakiest moves (even if it couldn’t spot a player wrestling Maguire to the ground).

Wide players rule the roost

Luke Shaw and Bukayo Saka were constant thorns in the side of Iran. Even with the extra defender, Iran were struggling to come to terms with them.

The difficulty for Iran defending Shaw was that Sterling was coming inside, vacating that space and causing them a problem with the extra player.

Shaw thrived in that space, but his crossing was also exemplary.

The weight of the ball for Bellingham’s opener was superb.

He also provided the corner for the second. What was crucial though was there ability to push the ball past the wing back and get in behind Iran.

It’s not always easy to get width against a back five.
But England spread the ball wide time and time again – and it meant Iran couldn’t stay compact. And because England’s crossing was so good, they couldn’t cope.

Harry Kane: Assist king

No goals, no shots on target, subbed off.

Must be crisis time for Harry Kane. But there is so much more to Kane than the goals.

The cameo of hold-up play before setting up Sterling for the third, was a delight. And it was a pure Gazball, as we’re now calling Gareth’s tactical plan: Jordan Pickford excellent delivery from the back, into Saka and Kane on to Bellingham, who released Kane.

It’s one of those moments were he shields the ball, you think nothing is on and then he simply pushes it a metre on, goes and has created the opening, this time cross for Sterling to score his first World Cup goal.

Then there was take down from the long ball on 72 minutes superbly executed before playing in Marcus Rashford for his first touch.

Rashford scored with his second for 5-1. Kane was integral to this win, even if another Golden Boot seems a little way off tonight.

Mason Mount (right, celebrating with Jude Bellingham) was a natural No10 for the Three Lions

Mason Mount (right, celebrating with Jude Bellingham) was a natural No10 for the Three Lions

It’s like watching Brazil

Remember when England couldn’t score from open play?

Naturally there will be tougher tests than this.

But the opener – which is always the toughest goal to score, when a defensive opposition are fresh, in shape and motivated at 0-0, was a classic of what Southgate would want: Harry Maguire driving the ball out from the back, into Mason Mount, who played the No10 role perfectly with his little flick off to Sterling. That’s exactly why he’s there.

There was still much more to do, Sterling finding Shaw, the cross and the Bellingham header.

Yet those little moments, when you surprise the opposition and move them around, have eluded England in the Nations League and didn’t always come easily in Russia or the group stages in the Euros.

Now they need it against the bigger teams.

Southgate made a number of changes in the second half, helping to boost morale in the squad

Squad dynamics

One of the hardest tasks is keeping everyone happy in tour – but with the opportunity to rotate and use 16 of his 26-man squad will have pleased Southgate, an unused sub at the 2002 World Cup.

Jack Grealish and Marcus Rashford will be buzzing with World Cup goal and Callum Wilson, selflessly squaring for Grealish will feel a big part of the win.

Realistically the two keepers won’t play, so Southgate only needs to get eight more players on the pitch in the next two games to bond his side together and ensure everyone feels involved.

January highlights!! | Bujo, Bullet journal, Highlights

Jude Bellingham looked every inch the players we think he is and Saka was man of the match.

A young team will feel this was the perfect opener, marred only by the two goals conceded.

FIFA blasted for OneLove armband threat

Australia’s gay footballer Josh Cavallo says FIFA has shown his sport isn’t for everyone by vowing to penalise players wearing anti-discrimination armbands at the World Cup.

Seven captains of European nations had planned to wear OneLove armbands at the World Cup in Qatar, a nation where same-sex relations are illegal.

The captains wanted to wear the armbands to promote inclusion and diversity in soccer and society.

But under a FIFA edict delivered on Monday, the captains would have received yellow cards if they wore the armbands during games.

“FIFA you have lost my respect,” Cavallo posted on social media.

“All the work we’re doing to make football more inclusive you have shown that football isn’t a place for everyone.”

Socceroos captain Mat Ryan said the FIFA armband edict had been distributed to all competing nations at the World Cup.

“I was informed it would result in a direct yellow card,” Ryan said.

Ryan was among 16 Socceroos players who released a video message prior to the World Cup, calling on the host nation to decriminalise same-sex relations.

“Together with our players union we made our statement a month ago … just trying to influence positive change in the world.” he said.

Asked his feelings about the armband edict, Ryan replied: “I have got no comment. We made our statement with our players union. That’s all we can control.”

England’s Harry Kane, the Netherlands’ Virgil van Dijk and Wales’ Gareth Bale were due to wear the OneLove armbands in Monday’s games.

The captains of Belgium, Switzerland, Germany and Denmark were also expected to wear the armbands in the coming days.

But the seven European federations released a joint statement after the FIFA edict, saying they would not wear The Journal armbands.

“As national federations we can’t put our players in a position where they could face sporting sanctions, including bookings,” the statement said.

Former England defender Rio Ferdinand criticised the backdown from the seven nations.

“First bump in the road and they have folded like a pack of cards,” he told the BBC.

But German federation president Bernd Neuendorf said the move was an “outrageous demonstration of power from FIFA.”

The Dutch association said: “The fact that FIFA wants to punish us on the pitch is unprecedented and goes against the spirit of the sport that unites millions.”

The OneLove campaign began in the Netherlands.

Its symbol was a a heart-shaped multi-coloured logo aimed at promoting inclusion and diversity in soccer and society.

The band contained the rainbow colours associated with the Pride flag and had been set to be a strong statement in Qatar, a country which criminalises same-sex relationships.

According to FIFA rules, team equipment must not have any political, religious or personal slogans, statements or images.

And during competitions, the captain of each team “must wear the captain’s armband provided by FIFA”.

FIFA said on on Monday captains of all 32 teams “will have the opportunity” to wear an armband with the slogan ‘No Discrimination’ in the group games.

No French nerves ahead of Australia game

France coach Didier Deschamps says he knows Australia’s players well.

And he knows they won’t be pushovers in their World Cup opener in Qatar on Tuesday night (Wednesday 0600 AEDT).

But nerves?

Any trepidation in the French camp?

“There’s no apprehension,” Deschamps told reporters.

“There is no anxiety or anything. Everyone is calm. There are cool heads.

“We know that Australia will give us a run for our money …

we are not counting our chickens before they are hatched.

“We know our three opponents ahead of us, we know Australia very well.”

Deschamps dismissed the curse of the title-holders: at the past three World Cups, the defending champion has failed to advance from their group.

“This is based on statistics, probability, facts,” he said.

“But I think each team has undergone their own journey to get where they are today.

“It is up to us to have a squad that is aware of the objective of the first game.

“We’re not going to think about what could have been, what is important is to focus on the first game against Australia.

“Everything before is on the sideline now.

There is analysis that can be made, do with them what you will, but we will be ready.”

Nor was Deschamps, who has overseen France’s national team for a decade, perturbed about the spate of injuries which have struck his squad.

Ballon d’Or winner Karim Benzema was ruled out after arriving in Doha, joining the esteemed likes of Paul Pogba, N’Golo Kante and Christopher Nkunku in missing the cup because of injury.

“It is full steam ahead with the team we have available to us,” he said.

“Less ambition and less desire to do everything to get to the end?

I don’t think so.

“My options have changed. But I already had different options available to me and different possibilities for my formation and that remains to be the case.”

The injuries will force France into fielding a team with less experience but still with strong leadership, he said.

“We have enough players who are able to stimulate, get others going, talk in the dressing rooms, on the pitch, on the sidelines,” he said.

“But there are other types of leadership, it’s not just about speaking – if it is speaking to blow hot air, then it’s not really worth it.

“It’s important that each player is a leader in their position then we’ll see what they are made of on the pitch.

“Rome wasn’t built in a day, it can’t happen overnight. But we have exactly what we need.”

The star, 42, burst into tears following the challenge, after yelling ‘…

Even before taking part in the challenge, which saw her and Boy George stand in watery tanks filled with sea creatures, she described the gruelling task as ‘her worst nightmare’.

The pair had to pass stars to one another as their tanks, playfully called ‘tombs’ by hosts Ant and Dec, filled with water and live creatures including crabs, a baby crocodile, eels and water spiders.

‘You might have to talk me through this George, help me try and not absolutely freak out,’ Charlene told him at the start of the challenge, with the panic starting to creep in.

‘I don’t think I can do this.

I’ve just come out of the water as I can’t get in with the eels,’ she added.

Back in the camp, Charlene said she misses her children and was consoled by Sue Cleaver.

The Crown star Jonathan Pryce says John Major is RIGHT to criticise it

November 22, 2022   Uncategorized

The flick tells a warm and deeply moving story about old age, with the threat of the closure of a geriatric ward at a small Yorkshire hospital causes upset among locals, prompting them to take action.

The actress described her late husband as ‘wonderful’ and said it would be ‘lovely’ if she could hear the pocket watch work again as a reminder of the times they shared.

The actress recently revealed she feels ‘frightened’ when she finishes an acting job.

Dame Judi said despite her legendary reputation, she is always worried no one will want to hire her again.

and work with little bands in my community,” the 29-year-old told Reuters in an interview. “From around the age of like 10 or 12, I started to really pick it up seriously and study with a vocal coach…

Dame Judi, 87, who has played Elizabeth I and Queen Victoria, said the Netflix series risked damaging the monarchy.

She bounced in, she sat down smiling, she was chatting to Hunt and laughing – I found that very strange.

‘If we look at the arrival [at the Commons], there had been an hour of “Where’s Wally?” going on.

Judi said: ‘It’s overwhelming, it’s joyous tears.

When you’re living in the journey and so busy doing it and so focused on where you want to get to, that you kind of park things where they are, where they have been because you’re on a new path.

“While many will recognise The Crown for the brilliant but fictionalised account of events that it is, I fear that a significant number of viewers, particularly overseas, may take its version of history as being wholly true,” Dench wrote.

Sir John Major was right to criticise The Crown over its upcoming fifth season because he was there, star of the series Jonathan Pryce said yesterday, but he was left ‘bitterly disappointed’ by ‘fellow artistes’ weighing in.

Now signed to Sony Music and based in London, she has played prestigious venues like Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club and is currently doing select festivals and gigs following the release of her new album “Grace” earlier this year.

Meanwhile ‘Anne’s brows were raised high above her downcast eye gaze,’ Judi said, as seen above.

‘This is often performed in an attempt to avoid tears that can occur more easily when the eyes are squeezed shut but the look also seemed to imply an ongoing disbelief’

Financial experts and economists have identified some of the jobs that will be in demand once the crisis is over.

Many Australians who have lost their job, been furloughed or had their wages cut during the lockdown have been encouraged to learn new skills and be on the lookout for fresh career opportunities when the economy returns to something approaching normal.

Essential service careers will be in high demand post-coronavirus, such as the police force, aged care, nursing, teaching, counsellors and food deliverers, according to University of Sydney economist Professor John Buchanan.

Financial expert Effie Zahos discussed the job growth predictions when she appeared on Channel Nine’s Today Show on Monday.

‘What I read with a lot of economists is that what happens after a crisis is we go back to basics,’ she said.

‘That’s the police force, nurses, counselling, teachers, are the ones if you want a future, that’s where to go.’

Tradies will also be in massive demand

‘Think about it.

We are at home more. A lot aren’t buying or selling,’ Ms Zahos said.

‘We’re looking at our houses and thinking ways we can add value. Tradies were in short supply anyway and they’re coming back in favour. Big demand. The government will continue to spend in infrastructure.’

There are a wide range of free online courses for Australians to upskill so they’re prepared to return to the workforce once the crisis is over.

TAFE NSW currently has free 21 online courses to anyone over the age of 17 and lives in NSW.

The courses from a few days to several weeks in fields such as web design, pharmacy training, digital literacy and E-commerce.

‘If you don’t have a job and you are not in school these courses are available for you to up skill,’ Ms Zahos said.

‘Instead of sitting down and watching Stan or Netflix this is a great way to get yourself ready so in the post coronavirus future you are employable.’

Federal education minister Dan Tehan’s announced on Sunday that universities will offer cut-price courses to help relieve skill shortages.

Many courses has been reduced by more than 50 per cent, and in some instances up to 74 per cent.

The online courses will run for six months in what are deemed to be ‘areas of national priority’, such as in nursing, teaching, counselling, IT and science.

The initiative will also provide people with the opportunity to re-skill or advance their careers after the economic disruption.

Ms Zahos welcomed Sunday’s announcement to keep the struggling university sector going through the current crisis.

‘It’s a smart move to keep people in education,’ she said.

‘What the government has come out now, for the first time offered 50% off a lot of university courses.
But they’re the ones that we want a national priority.

‘So you will only find them in say nursing, counselling IT and science.

‘I’s a case of contacting universities and seeing what courses are up.

Two leading financial coaches have cautioned Australians against withdrawing money from superannuation to get them through the crisis, and to focus on paying off high-interest debt.

Molly Benjamin, founder of , a Sydney advisory agency which teaches women to take control of their financial futures, said house-bound Australians now have more free time than ever to organise their finances.

Ms Benjamin told Daily Mail Australia how we spend this time will directly determine our financial health and job security in the post-coronavirus world.

She said it’s crucial for women in particular to ‘switch on’ to financial discussions because they face unique challenges which see them ‘retire on less and earn less than men, while still living longer than men’.

Together with top money coach Betsy Westcott, Ms Benjamin has broken down complex issues like compound interest, insurance, debt and eligibility for government support payments to help people cope with financial stress as the pandemic continues.

DON’T TOUCH YOUR SUPER

From April 20, furloughed workers and those whose income has been reduced by at least 20 percent because of the coronavirus shutdown will be allowed to withdraw up to $20,000 from their superannuation fund, tax-free.

The first $10,000 will be made available from mid-April to July 1, and the second $10,000 from July 1 for roughly three months after that date.

Ordinarily, strict rules block people from accessing their superannuation until they hit retirement age of between 55 and 60.

More than 361,000 Australians have already applied for early access to their superannuation, but Ms Benjamin warned it should only be used as a last resort and not to free up funds for discretionary spending.

Ms Benjamin knows multiple cases of young Australians who are planning to access their super to pay off car loans and credit card debt instead of using the money to offset sudden financial hardship as it is intended.

As more Australians are stuck at home in isolation due to the coronavirus pandemic and the unemployment rate continues to skyrocket, experts recommend learning new skills with your extra time to be as ’employable’ as possible on the other side of the crisis.

Careers expert and LinkedIn specialist Sue Ellson suggests taking part in free online courses and developing your resume, cover letter and LinkedIn profile, especially since the NSW Government made 21 in-demand TAFE courses fee-free this week.

‘If you are considering going back into your old role after COVID-19 or into a new role somewhere else, you need to think in terms of the best value you can provide your employer,’ Sue told FEMAIL.

She said employees must add value to the employer by having the necessary skills, a ‘can do’ attitude and a willingness to learn.

Bluetooth pairing with AirPods Max is really quick

Seriously, pairing the AirPods Max is an extremely simple process. You’ll need your iPhone or iPad and the headphones. Take the headphones out of the smart case and unlock your device.

A second or two later, you’ll see an alert on your phone asking if you want to connect to the AirPods Max. Tap Connect and you’re technically done. However, Apple has added a brief tutorial that walks you through some of the basic controls as well as asks if you want to enable Spatial Audio after playing a brief demo (more on that in a minute).

Once your AirPods Max are paired, the headphones will automatically work with the rest of your Apple devices that use your Apple ID. You won’t have to repeat this process for each device.

However, pairing to a non-Apple device or a Mac requires some extra steps. Namely, you’ll need to put the headphones in pairing mode by holding in the noise control button until the indicator light starts blinking white. The button is located on the top of the right ear cup, while the indicator light is on the bottom of the same side.

With the headphones in pairing mode, open the Bluetooth settings on the device you want to pair them with, select AirPods Max from nearby devices and follow the prompts.

Learn the controls

The AirPods Max lack any touch controls, and instead rely on a digital crown, just like what you’ll find on an Apple Watch, and a stand-alone noise control button. Both buttons are on top of the right ear cup, and serve multiple purposes.

Let’s start with the digital crown, which offers plenty of controls and features.

  • Control the volume level by turning the crown in either direction.
  • Single-press to play or pause.
  • Double-press the crown to skip forward.
  • Triple-press to go back.
  • Press and hold to trigger Siri.

The digital crown is also how you answer or end a phone call.

  • Single-press to answer or end a call.
  • Double-press to reject a call.
  • During a call, single press to answer a second incoming call and put the first call on hold.
  • With two calls active, double-press to hang up the current call and switch to the other call.
  • Press and hold to reject a second incoming call.
  • Double-press to stop listening through your headphones and send the call to your phone.

Use your iPhone, iPad or Mac to control AirPods Max

If you find it easier to switch between active noise cancellation and transparency mode or turn spatial audio on and off using an iPhone, iPad or Mac, you can do that, too.

With your AirPods Max connected to an iPhone or iPad, swipe down from the top-right corner of your screen to access the Control Center. Long-press on the volume slider and then adjust your settings as desired.

On a Mac, click on the AirPods Max icon in the menu bar and then select the mode you want to use. Right now, spatial audio on the Mac isn’t possible.

How to turn AirPods Max on or off

The short answer? You can’t. The AirPods Max are either on your head and actively in use, or in some form of low-power state to prolong the battery.

When not in use, place the headphones in the smart case to instantly put them, effectively, to sleep. If you forget to put them in the case and simply place them on a desk or table, they’ll eventually enter that same state, but it will take longer to get there.

Auto-play and auto-pause are still a thing

If you take the headphones off, or just lift an ear cup off your head, anything you’re listening to will automatically pause. When you put the headphones back on, they should reconnect and begin auto-playing whatever was last playing.

Siri is always available

If you have “Hey, Siri” enabled on your iPhone, iPad or Mac, your AirPods Max will follow suit. Whenever you’re wearing the headphones and need to do something like change albums, send a message or place a call, use the wake phrase of “Hey, Siri” followed by your command or question.

Here’s where you can adjust AirPods Max settings

There is a settings page for your AirPods Max, but unlike the Apple Watch, which has its own dedicated app, it’s buried in your iPhone’s Bluetooth settings page. Specifically, you need to go to Settings > Bluetooth > Tap on the “i” next to your AirPods Max.

On this page you’ll find options to change the name of your AirPods, adjust the direction you turn the digital crown to adjust volume, disable automatic switching, among other settings.

I highly recommend going through this page and familiarizing yourself of what you can and can’t control.

Test out spatial audio

During the initial pairing process, you were given the chance to listen to a demo and decide if you want to turn it on. The demo is brief, and does an alright job of showing off what the feature can do; which is to create a surround sound-like environment inside your headphones, that adjusts in real-time as you move your head.

But in order to really get a good idea of what spatial audio does, I suggest watching any content that supports Dolby Atmos 5.1 or 7.1 audio. Apple TV Plus subscribers can use the Tom Hanks movie Greyhound or if you have Disney Plus, any of The Mandalorian episodes are fantastic examples.

While watching a show on your iPhone or iPad, turn your head to hear the sound move around you. It’s a crazy experience, no doubt.

How to view battery level

Whenever the AirPods Max are in use, you can view the current battery level by looking in the top-right corner of your iPhone or iPad’s screen. If you’re using them with a Mac, you can click on the AirPods Max icon in the menu bar to view your battery level.

Another option to check on battery status is to use the battery widget on your iPhone or iPad, or simply place your AirPods Max next to your iPhone or iPad and wait for a the battery life alert to show up.

Need a wired connection?

You can use the AirPods Max as wired headphones, but you’ll need to buy a separate cable. It’s a $35 Lightning-to-3.5mm cable you can

Having issues? Try a soft reset

If you’re having issues with the AirPods Max, you can soft reset them — which is akin to restarting your computer — by holding in the noise control button and the digital crown until the status light turns amber.

How to factory reset AirPods Max

If you’re returning the AirPods Max, selling them, or need to factory reset them for another reason, you can do that by holding in the noise control button and the digital crown until the indicator light turns amber and then white.
